About the Program

The San Jose State University group at Karatepe refugee camp on the island of Lesvos, Greece.

This study abroad trip gave us the opportunity to tell immigrants' personal stories of struggle and fortitude. We also spoke with locals about the impact on their daily lives with the arrival of the immigrants. The crashing waves of refugees washing ashore on the coasts of Greece and Italy are changing the face of Europe. Many migrants have arrived in these countries, which are ill prepared financially to care for them. We delved into how their presence is affecting the economies and social structures of these two countries. We spoke directly to refugees, those still living in camps and those who are settled in their new homes.

The rest of the interviews and footage will be used to produce a documentary, which will be available in Fall/ Winter 2017. Stay tuned!

This is the second refugee-reporting trip led by Professors Guerrazzi and Kazem-Stojanovic. The first was in June & July 2016 to Greece and Germany. They will return to Italy and Greece in summer 2018 with another group of students to continue their reporting on the refugee crisis.
